We are always looking for people who would be interested in being DJs at SongPlanet and the glamorous high-life that goes with it! ![]()
Seriously, we are looking for people with passion for Independent Music, true interest in supporting the Indie community, and good musical judgment. SongPlanet strives to provide a financial benefit for independent musicians, and our best tool to do that is our live DJ programming. We know that when people hear the best Indie music out there, they will want to buy it.
SongPlanet Radio is the 21st Century version of 60's and 70's underground FM radio. Great music, much of it unknown to the masses, and interesting on-air personalities. The Internet provides a global audience and a worldwide library of music at SongPlanet.com. DJ Nomad runs the show between live programs, but only plays songs that have been deemed worthy by our DJs. DJ's aren't permitted to play their own music, though, so this is not an opportunity for blatant self-promotion.
• High speed Internet connection (DSL or cable)
• Computer with at least a 550mhz Pentium 3 processor and 256MB of RAM running either Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista
• Quality microphone
• A commitment to do at least two (and no more than 12) hours of programming per week for a minimum of three months. We know DJs are human (except for DJ Nomad, of course), so if you need time off, you can get it.
Listen to a DJ show or two to get an idea of what we are doing here.
Make an audition file for us to listen to. You can use any computer recording program to do this. Save the file as a .wav or .mp3 so that you can send it to us.
This file will be you being a SongPlanet DJ. We will need to hear you introduce songs, say tag lines such as, "You are listening to SongPlanet Radio, the voice of SongPlanet.com," and give us some "DJ banter." If you don't know what to say, check out our sample script for ideas.
Your demo will just be a few minutes long. Be yourself and act as you would on the air.
DO NOT INCLUDE ANY MUSIC... We don't need to hear songs, just you talking about them.
When that is done, email us, and we'll tell you how to get the file to us.
We will have you download the DJ console we use. We'll tell you how to set it up and make it work for you. When you have gotten familiar with the console, we will have you do a show into a stream only we at SP can listen to.
And then, you get to be interrogated by the Master of Gravity
, Axe, and will be given a copy of the top-secret DJ Guidelines.
Next step--DJ superstardom!
Profile:
You will develop an audience of regular listeners during your shows. People will talk about you.
Blatant self-promotion of your music and your business interests is allowed in the forums.
DJs are also entitled to a Pro Artist Plan based on the number of hours of programming they do each week.
• 2 hours - Pro Artist Member
• 3-6 hours - Pro Artist Basic
• 7-9 hours - Pro Artist Deluxe

Experience:
If you are a media student, or someone whose career could benefit from public speaking or performance, your work as a SongPlanet DJ could be a real asset on your resume.
Networking:
SongPlanet.com has the best Indie music, and plays it on SongPlanet Radio. You will interact with up-and-coming musicians and members of the Indie music community. Several collaborations have already arisen through SongPlanet relationships. The chat room can become quite crowded during the live DJ shows, and the forums provide opportunities for posting on a wide variety of topics.
Money(?):
Okay, you won't get rich. Being a DJ is a volunteer gig. But you will be able to sell your music from your Pro Artist site at SongPlanet. You will also receive residual payments for artists who sign up for Pro Artist Plans through your SongPlanet site. And you may be able to help out a charitable organization that is near and dear to your heart. SongPlanet Radio allows the DJs to promote approved charitable causes.
